Tree Spirits are Glimpsed in Flashes of Sunlight - Louise Heyden
Tree spirits are ancient and wise, offering healing magic, wisdom and insight. This introduction explains the types of tree spirits and how to work with tree spirits.

A tree spirit is a type of nature spirit, and effectively the “living soul” of a tree. It has much in the way of wisdom and healing to offer those who are willing to listen and absorb.

What Do Tree Spirits Look Like?

Tree spirits are not faeries as such, but nature spirits within a tree. One famous image is that of the Ents in The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, but true tree spirits are more ethereal in their appearance. As with faeries, they are visible to those with psychic awareness, and appear in varying forms depending on the type of tree they reside within. The tree spirit of a willow might appear as a tall, willowy woman, while a gnarled old tree might take the form of a wizened dwarf.

Tree spirits are ghostly and otherworldly, often glimpsed out of the corner of the eye in a darkened wood or a flash of sunlight through the forest canopy.

What Do Tree Spirits Do?

Primarily, tree spirits act as the guardians and life force of the trees. Responsible for nurturing and growing them, the tree spirits are keen to share their wisdom regarding the care of the planet, particularly that of forests, woods and the wildlife that dwells within. They are also excellent healers, and leaning against the trunk of a tree can bring about great restorative powers.

Older trees have much to share in terms of history, offering a sense of place, time and ancestry.

Tree spirits are not entirely bound to their tree; they can venture a short distance away. Legends tell of folk becoming unsettled in forests at night, because of the tree spirits stirring and walking about the woods.

Tree Mothers

The “Tree Mothers” or “Mother Trees” are female tree spirits much older and wiser than their younger counterparts, and have become known as matriarchal trees with a plethora of important spiritual wisdom to offer those eager to learn.

Tree mothers can be extremely intense to work with, ranging from the emotion of motherly comfort to the challenge of spiritual development and growth. The specific knowledge gleaned from such a tree depends on the species and the age through which the tree has lived, which can often span many centuries.

Tree mothers tend to be found in very old or mature trees, often in an ancient wood, and sometimes even in groups. The aura and spirit of the tree will feel much older and wiser than other trees.

Dryads and Tree Faeries

Although tree spirits are not faeries in themselves, there are faeries associated with them, such as dryads, tree wights or wood nymphs. Such faeries are not part of the trees themselves, but have attached themselves either to a lone tree or a group of trees. The triad of oak, ash and thorn is particularly appealing to faeries, and the most likely place to start looking for them. Oak in itself is a faerie tree, and dwarves are said to dwell within its deep, far-reaching roots.

Many other elements of the Fae are associated with trees, from the Green Man to the eternal seasonal battle between the Oak King and the Holly King.

Faerie trees include:

  • Apple - immortality, Avalon
  • Ash - prophecy, World Tree
  • Beech - ancestry, second sight
  • Cedar - purification, wisdom
  • Hawthorn - shapeshifting, protection
  • Hazel - magic, divination
  • Holly - divinity, rebirth
  • Oak - doorway to Faerie, endurance
  • Rowan - healing, attracting benevolent faeries
  • Willow - faerie visions, enchantment

Working with Tree Spirits

Firstly, it is vital to ensure a deep respect for trees in general. This includes always asking permission before taking something from a tree, and warning a tree of any impending pruning due to take place, to avoid causing distress to the spirit.

The best way to begin working with tree spirits is to sit beneath one, leaning against the trunk, touching the bark, drinking in the tree. Meditating beneath it may bring visions, messages or dreams. Those gifted with psychic awareness may be able to connect with the spirit and receive channeled words, or even see the spirit with the third eye.

Tree spirits often have a lot of knowledge to impart and it is wise to work with them in short, regular bursts so as not to become drained. They enjoy teaching and will encourage their students to develop their awareness and experience between visits.

By building relationships with different trees, much wisdom can be gained, along with healing, protection and insight into the generations that have passed before.

I have always loved trees much to many's disenchantment!
From my childhood I have loved and tried to protect trees and the inhabitants that depend on them. Today there is so much greed and evil and destruction they cut them and grind them to bits without a second thought ....I love trees and nature and have a connecdtion to rocks I always feel a connection with cirtain rocks quartz bearing especially..
I have always loved nature and creatures sometimes much more than humans...Nature has so many lessons and gifts if we can only love and respect her instaed of destroying and taking her over all the time! WHy does mankind feel the need to dominate and destroy living things so much???

Dear Guest:

I know you will likely never see this, but know you are not alone. I too feel this same connection with trees. It sad to see all this tearing up of the land. It is a main point of distress in my life. I live in an area that up until 5-7 years ago was a haven to me. A place to escape and heal, to hear the trees. A place that respected the land. But now it has changed.

I have a favorite place to go, and a tree that in some ways raised me. I care for her greatly, but can't do much for her. I have watched in the last few years as her area has fallen to disrepair, as the deer she loves are driven away and the river becomes unfit to drink. She has gone from happy almost bubbly to afraid and lonely.

It tears me apart that I can't help her more than I do. There used to be several who guarded her, but now I am all that is left. I often ask myself how there can be so much greed, and so much disregard for such a benevolent spirit. But I have come to realize it's because others do not see the world like you and I do.

Perhaps we were more open, maybe we're more sensitive.. maybe it's just we'll listen. I dunno. But it seems many can't feel it. Their minds are so clouded with gains that they forgot how to listen.

What I miss most is the little girls I used to see play there. I can only guess they were dryads. I miss the laughter sometimes heard on the wind, or the playful feeling that was there. I can only hope that one day I can get some land, plant some things and give them a new home.

I just wish I knew what to do in the meantime.. the sense of history I get at the spot that the spirit is right now is amazing even still, but I'm so worried I won't be able to feel that sense soon. I've never had a stronger connection with a wood spirit before. When she goes, it will be like a hole.

Both of you are clearly very sensitive to the tree spirits as I am. The wisdom and love they impart is indeed very moving and intense; I myself worked with a Willow Mother Tree for many years and although she is still there, I have moved away from the area and hardly see her now. It does indeed feel like a hole sometimes. However I have a wand made from one of her fallen twigs which I use to connect with her energy - this is something you could try. Know that simply being with her, working with her and listening to her is the best thing you can do - she will be thankful for it and bless you with her wisdom. Faerie blessings x

I have a very strange situation I was imminently about to exchange on a house purchase of which part of the contract the oak tree in the back garden blocking all the afternoon sun, which I find important to my wellbeing, was to be taken down. This was due to happen in two days time. The vendor was buying his mothers house from his two brothers and two days before the tree was due to come down one of the brothers objected to him buying the house and they have now pulled out of the sale.

I dont know about your article but I and my wife have a original clear pic of a tree spirit of sorts that was taken on a clear snowy day. the astral body or souls is very distinctive in the tree in our back yard. iwant to publish it but are not sure of offending the soul that is or was truly there.

Please post your tree spirit picture! What a blessing to have this spirit show up in your picture. It is my opinion that if it did not want to be photographed and shared, it would not have chosen to appear for you. I believe that sharing this photo will help inspire people to realize that tree spirits are real and may invoke a duty within them to help take care of the environment; that there is something more to a tree than its wood and leaves. If you decide to post it, I would so very much like to see it. If you feel comfortable letting me view it, I would feel very blessed and would not share it with anyone as it is not my place to do so but yours only. My e-mail address is Lanza1011@hotmail.com :)

Interesting. Can you define the difference between a "tree spirit" and the "Green Man"?

There is an old oak tree (a burr oak if i'm not mistaken) in a forest near my house in Ottawa Ontario Canada. It's massive and i'm sure it's somewhere between 300 and 500 years old. It appears that it was left in a farmers field, probably to provide shade to livestock that roamed the area many years ago, and was never cut down....the surrounding wood land that has grown up around it is maybe 30 or 40 years old (maybe less)...the tree is BEAUTIFUL, awe inspiring and everyone that sees it falls in love with it...I cannot explain it...we, my husband and I refer to this tree as The Big Tree. We take our dogs to this forest often throughout the year and always make our regular visits to the tree. I always hug the tree, I don't know why, but I cannot walk past it without touching it somehow...if i'm alone, i talk to it, my dogs sit quietly beside it (and they never sit still!!), I don't quite know how to explain how it makes me feel, but I LOVE it...I have never really thought about tree spirits, never grew up knowing they existed, but in the last 5 to 10 years or so, i have been feeling really strong connections to nature and when i first saw this tree, i knew something was different. Since discovering this tree, I have started seeing life differently, I am becoming more and more aware of the environment around me and although i have many miles to travel before I can be considered truly "green" I am determined to change as much as I can. And I know this started with the power that I have felt from The Big Tree...I don't know what it is, or where it comes from, reading these blogs here on this page is helping me understand that there is so much more to nature than what we see in front of us...my life has forever changed because of the Big Tree.

This article has been very helpful in helping me interpret a dream I had two nights ago. I dreamed of an oak tree that had a single eye (third eye) located on its trunk...just below the area where the branchs connect. It was a very "strange experience". I can't stop thinking about the meaning of this dream. Do you have any insight you would like to share?

My mother's love of trees was passed down to me and I in turn will pass my love of them unto my children. I have made so many different things but I always wanted to make something to do with the spirits of the forest but could never make anything to do them justice. Then when my mother passed away I spread her ashes under the old and wisest pine tree on our avenue. One week later I made a tree spirit, then another, then another until I had completed the whole Celtic tree zodiac, 13 in total. My interpretation of these spirits can be found at www.rathart.com. I hope you like them. Regards Nikki

It saddens me the fact that so many people have absolutely no respect for trees. I've just had a very sad experience with a group of teens ripping limbs from some trees by my house. I felt so hopeless that I couldn't do anything about the fact that they's done it; I literally felt like a part of me was getting ripped out as I saw them tearing it apart. I'm going back there to leave an offering when I can. It makes me so sad that there seems to only be a few of us that have such a deep connection to nature. Why do people find it necessary to destroy everything?

Trees have always been close to my heart. I have a deep respect for them. My parents have a small grove of Walnut trees in their backyard. It's what's left of a small forest that was removed for development. My parents and the neighborhood fought valiantly to protect the forest but unfortunately lost the the battle. But there are several Walnut trees left.

I was in my parents' backyard searching for a branch for a wand. I had my little hacksaw and was ready to go. This was the time when I heard a tree spirit speak to me for the first time. To make a long story short, it told me to put down my hacksaw, ask permission from the trees, and allow myself to be guided to the tree that will offer a branch. That's exactly what happened. The tree that offered a branch was from a small cluster of older trees.

After I got a branch, I thanked the tree. I heard a thought come to me as clear as day. It said, "Alone, we can only do so much. But as a team, we can do much more."

Never knew there were tree spirits until yesterday. But I am convinced it was the spirit of the tree that spoke to me. I feel very blessed and honored to have heard them. Now that I have read this article, I'm beginning to understand that perhaps there's even more lessons I can learn as I continue to remain open to being taught. Thank you so much for this article. And I will visit the Walnut tree tomorrow!
