From Bella’s striped daisy cake, to Twilight book covers, there are many ideas for creating incredible Twilight cakes. Here are instructions for making some of the most popular choices.
Twilight Red Velvet Cake
Basically a Devil’s Food Cake with red food coloring, this cake has a chocolate flavor and moist texture, topped with a white frosting made from either cream cheese, buttercream or butter roux.
Make the cake using a quality red velvet cake recipe, and customize accordingly. Cut out black and white fondant squares to create a chess board on top of the frosting, or top with an edible Twilight cake topper, fondant wolf or chess piece.
Twilight Chess Board Cake
A hugely popular Twilight cake theme is to recreate the chessboard from the cover of the fourth book, Breaking Dawn.
The easiest option is to make a square sponge cake, but more advanced cake makers can try other shapes.
Make the chessboard topping as follows:
- Cover the entire cake in white fondant
- Roll out a layer of black fondant
- Using a small square cookie cutter, cut out black squares and stick them to the cake, using buttercream as glue if needed
- Carefully line up the squares to create a chessboard effect. To get the board completely lined up and level, cut out and add white fondant squares as well
The cover also features two chess pieces – a white queen and a red pawn. Sculpt these from white and red fondant, or create chocolate versions by using chess piece chocolate molds. Use white chocolate for both, and color the pawn with red food coloring.
To add an even more incredible dimension to this cake, make the sponge a checkerboard cake recipe! If this seems too daunting, make life easier with a Wilton checkerboard cake pan. Party guests will be even more astounded when they see what is inside the amazing Breaking Dawn cake!
Twilight Book Cover Cake
Another popular and impressive theme is to create a cake in the shape of one of the actual Twilight books.
To make the basic book cake:
- Bake two 9x13 sponge cakes and stack on top of each other
- Cover the cake in white fondant
- Roll out a large rectangle of black fondant, and wrap around the cake to create the cover
- Form an indent in the fondant to create the spine and binding
- Gently use a comb or fork to create lines in the white fondant to create pages
Decorate the top with the desired cover design, or create a combination of all four covers. Make a flat fondant or frosting decoration, or top with 3D versions of the cover contents. The options are:
- Twilight – two hands holding an apple. Make a fondant apple, use a real or fake apple, or mold a chocolate apple
- New Moon – ruffled Estella Rijnveld tulip. Use a real or silk ruffled tulip, or make white fondant petals accented with red icing
- Eclipse – broken satin ribbon. Use a real one or make an edible one from a strip of red fondant
- Breaking Dawn – chessboard with white queen and red pawn – see Chessboard Cake above
Bella’s Gerbera Daisies Cake from the New Moon Movie
In the movie version of New Moon, Alice throws a party for Bella complete with Bella's striped cake decorated with Gerbera daisies. Although the movie cake was fake, the striped icing effect was created by Thomas Haas Fine Chocolates.
Recreate Bella's New Moon cake as follows:
- Bake three different sizes of sponge cake. Depending on the size required, you may need to bake two of each size and stack them together
- Cover each tier with thick white fondant before stacking one on top of the other. Support with dowel rods if needed
- Divide a package of fondant icing into five batches. Tint each batch a different shade of green with food coloring
- Roll out each colored batch into a thin sheet. Cut these into strips, varying the width
- Use stiff royal icing or buttercream as glue to attach the strips around each tier
- Decorate the finished cake with green, yellow and red Gerbera daisies. Use decorative silver cake letters to spell out “Bella” or the name of the birthday girl or boy
