Exciting Library Quizzes
Children love a challenge, so the more competitions and quizzes the library holds, the better! A little imagination can keep quizzes fresh, with ideas such as:
- A break time quiz based on a popular TV quiz show
- A treasure trail of questions and clues to solve
- Fascinating facts or general knowledge quizzes
- Quiz sheets that involve exploring the Dewey system

Fun Library Activities
There are many sources of activity ideas for using in the school library. Some ideas include:
- A treasure hunt with clues hidden on certain pages of different books
- A murder mystery or crime scene investigation
- A dressing-up competition themed around different books and characters
- Design and drawing competitions to create posters, bookmarks or library art
- Fun clubs held at break or after school
Holding a Library Book Fair
Some publishing companies offer book fairs to schools. This is a great way to get kids into the library, as they are usually able to buy books, posters and fun stationery for discounted prices. Many include schemes that reward the school with free books or vouchers based on commission.
Organizing an Author Visit to the School
Even non-readers will enjoy a special talk or workshop with a visiting author. From newly published, unknown writers to someone popular, most authors will happily gives talks, answer questions and even hold writing workshops with pupils. Organize author visits efficiently to ensure a smooth day.
Educational Library Software
Many software packages are now available for libraries, such as Renaissance Reading or Junior Librarian. They can help entice greater usage of the library by combining books and learning with technology. Online quizzes can be used to monitor reading levels, or the library software itself used to encourage book reviews and shared opinions.
Educational Games for the Library
Games are also an excellent way to promote learning in a fun way in the library. Why not try:

School libraries should no longer be considered a quiet and boring area. The key to successful school libraries is to balance study and reading with fun activities that stimulate children and inspire them to explore further.
